Raising Beef Cows

Quality Angus
Blackwood Farms is primarily an Angus cow and calf operation. We also raise quality Angus bred heifers and Angus beef for delicious homegrown meals.
Healthy Foundation
With Blackwood Farms, raising calves from birth is the foundation to having healthy, proven animals. Whether you are purchasing young bred heifers or filling your freezer with meat, you can be assured your animal has received daily observation and care from birth, without unnecessary drugs or growth hormones. Our calves only receive critical vaccines when they are weaned, much like the flu shot during flu season.

Genetic Selection
Working with like-minded farms and ranches, Blackwood Farms carefully selects genetically proven animals for their forage efficiency. This gives us the ability to produce thick, heavy-weight calves at weaning and a high-rate of gain throughout their growth period.
Regenerative & Rotational Grazing
Blackwood Farms is a small farm, so managing the number of cows, raising forage efficient cows, and using practices such as regenerative and rotational grazing techniques are crucial. Regenerative and rotational grazing is the practice of building soil health by rotating cows on perennial and annual forages in a way that supports a healthy ecosystem. Cows and calves densely graze small portions of the pastures for a certain period of days, depositing manure as nutrients for the forages to grow between grazings. Pastures are then allowed to rest 60 - 90 days, establishing deeper roots and greater organic matter for a healthier, highly fertile soil. Spending the extra time managing the pastures eliminates the need for chemicals and fertilizers, while providing a healthy, lush grass for the animals.

Feeding Our Herd
The importance of where our food comes from and how it is raised and cared for is important to Blackwood Farms. That is why the main diet for the herd is grass in the spring, summer, and fall and hay in the winter that we cut and bale on the farm. Our feeder calves receive only a small amount of grain as they grow for healthy delicious beef.
Our Fields
Providing quality hay for the cows to eat during the winter takes time and patience. Weather plays a huge part in this process.
